An-niyyah, al-ikhlas and as-sidq
[Intention, purity and sincerity]
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
نَحْمَدُه وَنُصَلِّ عَلٰى رَسُوْلِهِ الْكَرِيْمِ
[1]إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions,
وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى
and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.
Sahih- Narrated by Umar (ra), Sahih Bukhari 1
[2] لاَ هِجْرَةَ وَلَكِنْ جِهَادٌ وَنِيَّةٌ
There is no migration (after the Conquest), but Jihad and good intentions.
Sahih- Narrated by ibn Abbas (ra), Sahih Bukhari 3077.
[3] إِنَّمَا يُبْعَثُ النَّاسُ عَلَى نِيَّاتِهِمْ
People will be resurrected according to their intentions.
Sahih- Narrated by Abu Huraira (ra), Sunan ibn Majah 4229.
[4] إِنَّ اللهَ كَتَبَ الْحَسَنَاتِ وَالسَّيِّئَاتِ
Allah ordered (the appointed angels over you) that the good and the bad deeds be written.
Sahih- Narrated by ibn Abbas (ra), Sahih Bukhari 6491.
[5] مَنْ هَمَّ بِحَسَنَةٍ فَلَمْ يَعْمَلْهَا، كُتِبَتْ لَهُ حَسَنَةً
He who intended to do good, but did not do it, one good was recorded for him.
Sahih- Narrated by Abu Huraira (ra), Sahih Muslim 130.
[6] إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يَنْظُرُ إِلَى أَجْسَادِكُمْ، وَلَا إِلَى صُوَرِكُمْ، وَلَكِنْ يَنْظُرُ إِلَى قُلُوبِكُمْ
Verily Allah does not look to your faces and your wealth but He looks to your heart and to your deeds.
Sahih- Narrated by Abu Huraira (ra), Sahih Muslim 2564.
[7] رُبَّ صَائِمٍ لَيْسَ لَهُ مِنْ صِيَامِهِ إِلَّا الْجُوعُ
There are people who fast and get nothing from their fast except hunger,
وَرُبَّ قَائِمٍ لَيْسَ لَهُ مِنْ قِيَامِهِ إِلَّا السَّهَرُ
and there are those who pray and get nothing from their prayer but a sleepless night.
Sahih- Narrated by Abu Huraira (ra), Sunan ibn Majah 1690.
[8] مَنْ طَلَبَ الشَّهَادَةَ صَادِقًا، أُعْطِيَهَا، وَلَوْ لَمْ تُصِبْهُ
Who seeks martyrdom with sincerity shall get its reward, though he may not achieve it.
Sahih- Narrated by Anas (ra), Sahih Muslim 1908.
[9] مَنْ سَأَلَ اللهَ الشَّهَادَةَ بِصِدْقٍ، بَلَّغَهُ اللهُ مَنَازِلَ الشُّهَدَاءِ، وَإِنْ مَاتَ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ
Who sought martyrdom with sincerity will be ranked by Allah among the martyrs even if he died on his bed.
Sahih- Narrated by Sahl bin Abu Umamah (ra), Sahih Muslim 1909.
[10] لَا يَسْتَقِيمُ إِيمَانُ عَبْدٍ حَتَّى يَسْتَقِيمَ قَلْبُهُ
No servant’s faith can be right unless his heart is right,
وَلَا يَسْتَقِيمُ قَلْبُهُ حَتَّى يَسْتَقِيمَ لِسَانُهُ
And his heart will not be right until his tongue is right.
Sahih- Narrated by Anas (ra), Musnad Ahmad 13048.
[11] إِنَّكَ لَنْ تُنْفِقَ نَفَقَةً تَبْتَغِي بِهَا وَجْهَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا أُجِرْتَ عَلَيْهَا،
You will be rewarded for whatever you spend for Allah’s sake.
حَتَّى مَا تَجْعَلُ فِي فَمِ امْرَأَتِكَ
even if it were a morsel which you put in your wife’s mouth.
Sahih- Narrated by Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (ra), Sahih Bukhari 56.
[12] مَا الْإِيمَان قَالَ الْإِخْلَاص
What is Iman (faith)? He (saw) said, Ikhlas (devotion to words and deeds).
Sahih- Narrated by Abu Firas (ra), Shuabul Iman 6441.
[13] إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يَقْبَلُ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ إِلَّا مَا كَانَ لَهُ خَالِصًا وَابْتُغِيَ بِهِ وَجْهُهُ
Allah does not accept any deed, except that which is purely for Him, and seeking his Face.
Sahih- Narrated by Abu Umamah (ra), Sunan an Nasai 3140.
[14] الدُّنْيَا مَلْعُونَةُ، مَلْعُونٌ مَا فِيهَا إِلَّا مَا ابْتُغِيَ بِهِ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ
The world is cursed. cursed is everything in it, except that which seeks for Allah’s sake.
Hasan- Narrated by Abu Darda (ra), Tabrani-Musnad ash-Shamiyin 612.
[15] إِنَّمَا يَنْصُرُ اللَّهُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةَ بِضَعِيفِهَا، بِدَعْوَتِهِمْ وَصَلَاتِهِمْ وَإِخْلَاصِهِمْ
Rather, Allah support this Ummah because of their supplication, their salah and their sincerity.
Sahih- Narrated by Mus’ab ibn Sa’d (ra), Sunan an Nasai 3178.
[16] فَمَنْ عَمِلَ مِنْهُمْ عَمَلَ الْآخِرَةِ لِلدُّنْيَا، لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ نَصِيبٌ
Whoever among them does the deeds of the hereafter for the sake of this world, he will not have a share in the hereafter.
Sahih- Narrated by Ubai ibn Ka’b (ra), Musnad Ahmad 21220.
[17] مَنْ قَامَ مَقَامَ رِيَاءٍ وَسُمْعَةٍ رَاءَى اللهُ بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَسَمَّعَ
Whoever stands in a position of hypocrisy (show off) and reputation, Allah will see him on the Day of Resurrection and will hear him.
Sahih- Narrated by Abu Hind ad Dari (ra), Musnad Ahmad 22322.
[18] مَنْ سَمَّعَ النَّاسَ بِعَمَلِهِ سَمَّعَ اللهُ بِهِ سَامِعَ خَلْقِهِ، وحَقَّرَهُ وصَغَّرَهُ
He who publicizes deed among the people, allah will convey his ostentatious behavior to the ears of the people and He will disgrace and humiliate him.
Sahih- Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Umar (ra) Musnad Ahmad 6509.
[19] مَنْ سَمَّعَ سَمَّعَ اللَّهُ بِهِ، وَمَنْ يُرَائِي يُرَائِي اللَّهُ بِهِ
He who lets the people hear of his good deeds intentionally, to win their praise, Allah will let the people know his real intention and he who does good things in public to show off and win the praise of the people, Allah will disclose his real intention (and humiliate him).
Sahih- Narrated by Zundub (ra), Sahih Bukhari 6499.
[20] يَقُومُ الرَّجُلُ فَيُصَلِّي فَيُزَيِّنُ صَلَاتَهُ جَاهِدًا
Whoever stands in prayer and then tries to make it beautiful,
لِمَا يَرَى مِنْ نَظَرِ النَّاسِ إِلَيْهِ، فَذَلِكَ شِرْكُ السَّرَائِرِ
As people see him, this is hidden shirk.
Hasan- Narrated by Mahmud ibn labid (ra) Sahih ibn khuzaima 937.
[21] فَمَنْ عَمِلَ لِي عَمَلًا أَشْرَكَ فِيهِ غَيْرِي، فَأَنَا مِنْهُ بَرِيءٌ
(Allah says) Thus he who does an action for someone else’s sake as well as Mine will have that action renounced by Me to him.
Sahih- Narrated by Abu Huraira (ra), Sunan ibn Majah 4202.
[22] اصْدُقُوا إِذَا حَدَّثْتُمْ
When you speak, speak the truth.
Sahih- Narrated by Ubadah Ibnus Samit (ra), Musnad Ahmad 22757.
[23] إِنَّ الصِّدْقَ يَهْدِي إِلَى البِرِّ، وَإِنَّ البِرَّ يَهْدِي إِلَى الجَنَّةِ
Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise.
Sahih- Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (ra), Sahih Bukhari 6094.
[24] عَلَيْكُمْ بِالصِّدْقِ، فَإِنَّهُ مَعَ الْبِرِّ وَهُمَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ
You must adhere to the truth, for with it comes righteousness and they both lead to Paradise.
Sahih- Narrated by Abu Bakar (ra) Sunan ibn Majah 3849.
[25] دَعْ مَا يَرِيبُكَ إِلَى مَا لَا يَرِيبُكَ
Leave what makes you in doubt for what does not make you in doubt.
فَإِنَّ الصِّدْقَ طُمَأْنِينَةٌ وَإِنَّ الْكَذِبُ رِيبَةٌ
The truth brings tranquility while falsehood sows doubt.
Sahih- Narrated Hasan (ra) Sunan At tirmidhi 2518.
[26] الْبِرُّ مَا سَكَنَتْ إِلَيْهِ النَّفْسُ، وَاطْمَأَنَّ إِلَيْهِ الْقَلْبُ
Virtue is that work, so that the mind become stable and calm.
وَالْإِثْمُ مَا لَمْ تَسْكُنْ إِلَيْهِ النَّفْسُ، وَلَمْ يَطْمَئِنَّ إِلَيْهِ الْقَلْبُ
And sin is that work, towards which the mind don’t become fixed and calm.
وَإِنْ أَفْتَاكَ الْمُفْتُونَ
And no matter what people say.
Sahih- Narrated by Abu Salaba Khushani (ra), Musnad Ahmad 17742.
[27] يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، قُولُوا قَوْلَكُمْ، فَإِنَّمَا تَشْقِيقُ الْكَلَامِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ
O people, say what you have to say. seeking to present words is the best manner is from Shaytan.
Sahih- Narrated Zaid ibn Aslam (ra) Al Adabul Mufrad 875.
[28] إِنَّ كَثْرَةَ الْكَلَامِ فِي الْخُطَبِ مِنْ شَقَاشِقِ الشَّيْطَانِ
Too many words in orations comes from the skills of shaytan.
Sahih- Narrated by Anas (ra) Al Adabul Mufrad 876.
[29] هَلَكَ الْمُتَنَطِّعُونَ
Ruined, were those who indulged in hair-splitting.
Sahih- Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (ra) Sahih Muslim 2670.
[30] إِنَّ مِنَ الْبَيَانِ سِحْرًا، وَإِنَّ مِنَ الشِّعْرِ حِكْمَةً
There is some magic eloquence and some wisdom in poetry.
Sahih- Narrated ibn Abbas (ra), Al Adab Al Mufrad 872.
[31] الْحَيَاءُ وَالْعِيُّ شُعْبَتَانِ مِنَ الْإِيمَانِ
Shyness and speak little are two branches of faith,
وَالْبَذَاءُ وَالْبَيَانُ شُعْبَتَانِ مِنَ النِّفَاقِ
and Dirty and Unnecessary talk are two branches of Hypocrisy.
Sahih- Narrated by abu Umamah (ra), Sunan at Tirmidhi 2027.
[32] لَيْسَ الكَذَّابُ الَّذِي يُصْلِحُ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ، فَيَنْمِي خَيْرًا، أَوْ يَقُولُ خَيْرًا
He who makes peace between the people by inventing good information or saying good things, is not a liar.
Sahih- Narrated by Umme qulsum (ra), Sahih Bukhari 2692.
[33] مَا أُحِبُّ أَنِّي حَكَيْتُ أَحَدًا وَأَنَّ لي كَذَا وَكَذَا
I do not like to talk about anyone, even if I were to get this or that.
Sahih- Narrated by Aisha (ra), Sunan at Tirmidhi 2503.
[34] إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْمَدَّاحِينَ فَاحْثُوا فِي وُجُوهِهِمُ التُّرَابَ
When you see those who praise people, throw dust in their faces.
Sahih- Narrated by Umar (ra), Al Adab al Mufrad 340.
[35] وَيْلٌ لِلَّذِي يُحَدِّثُ فَيَكْذِبُ وَيَضْحَكُ بِهِ الْقَوْمُ وَيْلٌ لَهُ وَيْلٌ لَهُ
Woe to the one who talks about something to make the people laugh, in which he lies. Woe to him! Woe to him.
Sahih- Narrated by Bahz bin Hakim (ra), Sunan at tirmidhi 2315.
[36] مَنْ صَمَتَ نَجَا
Whoever is silent, he is saved.
Sahih- Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr (ra), Sunan at tirmidhi 2501.
[37] مَقَامُ الرَّجُلِ لِلصَّمْتِ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ عِبَادَةِ سِتِّينَ سَنَةً
The rank a man attains by observing silence is better than by occupying in worship for sixty years.
Sahih- Narrated by Imran ibn Hussain (ra), Shuabul Iman 4602.
[38] إِنَّ اللهَ يُحِبُّ الْعَبْدَ التَّقِيَّ، الْغَنِيَّ، الْخَفِيَّ
Allah loves the servant who is God-conscious and is free from want and is hidden (from the view of people).
Sahih- Narrated by Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (ra), Sahih Muslim 2965.
[39] خِيَارُ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الَّذِينَ إِذَا رُؤُوا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ
The best slaves of Allah are they who when they are seen remind one of Allah.
Hasan- Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Umar (ra), Shuab Al iman 6282.
[40] قَرِيبًا حَرَّمَهُ اللهُ عَلَى النَّار ِ مَنْ كَانَ هَيِّنًا لَيِّنً
Whoever is humble, gentle and sociable, Allah will forbid the fire of Hell for him.
Hasan- Narrated by Abu Huraira (ra), Al mustadrak hakim 435.
