Salaf Qoutes

Praise

Ka’b al-Ahbār (رحمه الله) said:

‏والله ما استَقَرَّ لعَبدٍ ثَناءٌ في الأرضِ، ‏حتَّى يَستَقِرَّ له في أَهلِ السَّماء.

“By Allāh, no praise is established for a servant on earth until it is established for them among the inhabitants of the heavens.” [Al-Zuhd by Ibn al-Mubarak: 1/153]

Silence   

Sufyān ibn ʿUyainah (رحمه الله) said:

‏“الصمت زين العالم، وستـر الجاهل.”

“Silence is the adornment of the scholar and the cover of the ignorant.” [Muʿjam Ibn al-Muqri: 1070]

Whoever satisfies

Abu Bakr Al-Warraq (رحمه الله) said:

‏مَن أرضى الجوارح بِالشّهوات؛ فقد غرس في قلبِهِ شجر النّدامات

“Whoever satisfies their limbs with desires has planted in their heart the tree of regrets.” [Al-Zuhd Al-Kabeer by Al-Bayhaqi: 159]

Who knows hadith but does not know arabic

Shu‘ba said: “The example of someone who knows hadith but does not know Arabic is that of a donkey which has a nosebag with no food in it.” [tafsir al qurtubi 26]

Pious person

Muhammad ibn Wāsi’ رحمه الله  said: “I have witnessed men, one of whom would stand in the row [during prayer], and tears would flow down his cheek, without the person next to him even noticing.” [Al-Ikhlās: 36]

Foolishness

Mālik ibn Anas (رحمه الله) said:

‏“السَّفَهُ والدَّناءةُ لا يَعجَزُ عنْهُما أحدٌ، ولكن عليك بِما تَنْقَطِع الرِّقابُ دُونَه؛ وهو الكَرمُ والمُروءة”

“Foolishness and baseness are within everyone’s reach, but strive for what necks are severed in its pursuit: nobility and honor.” [Tarṭīb al-Madārik: 2/69]

Luqman’s (as) advice

Imam Malik (رحمه الله) said: “I have been informed that Luqman said to his son: ‘O my son, the first thing you should acquire from this world, after a righteous friend, is a righteous wife.’” [Al-Bayan wa al-Tahseel: 323/4]

Free-mixing

Shaykh-ul-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah: “Free-mixing of men with women leads to increase in shamelessness and Zinā (adultery)” [at tarqiul hukmiyah 439]

In the marketplace

Al-Hasan Al-Basri رحمه الله said: “Do you allow your women to mix with men in the marketplaces? May Allah curse those who have no jealousy (or protective honor).” [Qūt Al-Qulūb: 2/418]

Silence

Al-Ahnaf ibn Qays (رحمه الله) said:

‏“الصمتُ أمانٌ من تحريفِ اللفظِ، وعصمةٌ من زيغِ المنطقِ، وسلامةٌ من فضولِ القولِ، وهيبةٌ لصاحبِه.”

“Silence is a safeguard from distorting words, a protection from the deviation of speech, a safety from unnecessary talk, and a source of dignity for its possessor.” [Rawdat al-‘Uqala: 43]

jealousy

Ibn Taymiyyah said: “From the people are whose jealousy carries them to backbiting so he combines both these two ugly actions.” [majmoo al fatwa 28/238]

Do not consult

Talhah ibn Ubaydullah (رضي الله عنه) said: “Do not consult a miser about charity, nor a coward about war, nor a young man about a female servant.” [Makārim al-Akhlaq by al-Khuraīti: 252]

Halal food

Imam Ahmad (رحمه الله) said:

‏“تلين القلوب بأكل الحلال”

“The hearts are softened by consuming what is halāl.” [Ṭabaqāt al-Ḥanābilah: 1/219]

jealousy & enmity

Ibn Al-Arabi said: “If the people don’t find a fault in someone they have jealousy & enmity for, they invent faults in him.” ‎[al awasim minal qawasim 2/469]

righteous companion

Dhun-Nūn Al-Misri رحمه الله said: “In the companionship of the righteous, life becomes pleasant and all goodness is found in a righteous companion. If you forget, they remind you, and if you remember, they help you.” [Sifatu Safwa: 2/387]

If you are able to

Sufyān al-Thawrī (رحمه الله):

‏إن استطعت ألا تحُكّ رأسك إلا بأثر فافعل.

“If you are able to not even scratch your head except with a narration, then do so.” [Al-Jāmiʿ: 19]

Allāh took responsibility for

Ibn Abbās said: “Allāh took responsibility for who reads the Qur’ān & ACTS ON what is in it; he won’t go astray in this life nor despair in hereafter. ‎[Miftahu darussaadah 1/57]

Intentions sincere for Allāh

Imām al-Shāfiʿī

(رحمه الله تعالى): لو اجتهدت كُلّ الجهد على أن تُرضي النّاس كُلّهُم فلا سبيل إليْهٍ، فإذا كانَ كذلك فأخلص عملكَ ونيّتكَ لِلّهِ.

“If you were to strive with all your effort to please all the people, you would find no way to do so. Therefore, make your actions and intentions sincere for Allāh.” [Manaqib al-Shāfiʿī by al-Bayhaqī: 2/173]

People

Al-Hasan al-Basri (رحمه الله) said:

لَا تَزَالُ كَرِيمًا عَلَى النَّاسِ وَلَا يَزَالُ النَّاسُ يُكْرِمُونَكَ مَا لَمْ تَتَعَاطَ مَا فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ فَإِذَا فَعَلْتَ ذَلِكَ اسْتَخَفُّوا بِكَ وَكَرِهُوا حَدِيثَكَ وَأَبْغَضُوكَ

“People will continue to honor you as long as you do not take what is in their hands. But if you do so, they will despise you, dislike your speech and hate you!” [Hilyat al-Awliya: 3/20]

Do not place

al-Bayhaqī: “Do not place any piece of cloth or any other book on top of Qur’ān, if a Mus-ḥaf is placed on another Mus-ḥaf it’s fine.” [shuabul iman 2/329]

child’s good deeds

Umar ibn Al-Khattāb رضي الله عنه said: “The child’s good deeds are recorded, but sins are not recorded against him!” [Al-Istidhkar: 4/398]

Glad tidings

Al-Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad:

طُوبى لِمن اسْتَوْحش من النّاس، وكانَ الله أنِيسهُ، وبكى على خطِيئتِهِ

Glad tidings to the one who feels estranged from the people, and Allah becomes his companion, and he weeps over his sin. [Hilyat al-Awliya’ (108/8)]

Don’t follow woman’s back

al-‘Alā b. Ziyād رحمه الله: “DO NOT follow a woman’s back with your sight for indeed the look produces desire in the heart.”‎ [az zuhud 311]

 Four things

Abdullah ibn al-Hasan رحمه الله said: “Four things are from the happiness of a person: That his wife is righteous. That his children are pious. That his livelihood is in his own country. That his brothers are righteous.” [Al-Ikhwān: 105]

ls of a man

Sufyan al-Thawri (رحمه الله):

من فِتْنة الرّجُل إذا كان فقِيهًا؛ أن يكون الكلام أحبّ إليه من السُّكوت.

One of the trials of a man, if he is a scholar, is that he loves speaking more than remaining silent. [Al-Adab Al-Shar’iyyah: 1/3]

A hypocrite

Qatadah said: “A hypocrite will never stay up at night (in prayer).” [az zuhud ibn al Mubarak 1/31]

The most tender-hearted people

Makhḥūl:

أرق الناسِ قُـلـوبـًا ، أقلهُم ذُنـوبـًا

“The most tender-hearted people are those with the least sins.” [Al-Riqqah wa al-Bukā’, Ibn Abī al-Dunyā: 66]

Cannot consume‎ iman

al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī used to say: “The grave eats away the fat and flesh (of the deceased) but it cannot consume (his) Eemān.” ‎ [al azlah wa al infirad, ibn abid dunya 204]

Company

Abu al-‘Abbas al-Kankashi (رحمه الله) said:

‏”ولا تصحب أحدًا من الناس، إلا من تراهُ ينصحُك في أمر دينك، ويُشفق عليك في أمر آخرتك.”

“Do not accompany anyone except one whom you see advising you regarding your religion and showing compassion for your Hereafter.” [Usūl al-Dīn fī al-Islām: 147]

Qur’ān is the Speech of Allāh

‎Ibn Mas’ood رضي الله عنه: “Qur’ān is the Speech of Allāh, uncreated, so indeed whoever loves Qur’ān then he loves Allāh.” [fiqh al adiyah wa alazkar]‎

Allah’s power

Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz wrote to his governors: “To proceed, if your power tempts you to wrong the people, then remember Allah’s power over you.” [Tārīkh Dimishq: 45/202]

Changing evil

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Imām Aḥmad: “Changing evil with hand is NOT done with sword and weapon.” [jamul ulum wa al hikam 34]

Be shy before Allah

Bilal ibn Sa’ad (رحمه الله) said: “Be shy before Allah, and beware of Allah. Do not feel secure from Allah’s plan, and do not despair of Allah’s mercy.” [Shu’ab al-Iman: 770]

Allāh has made men protectors

Sh Ibn ‘Uthaymīn: “Allāh has made men protectors so it’s OBLIGATORY upon them to safeguard their women from every cause of Fitnah.” [al liqa 3]

Welcome to winter

Ibn Mas’ūd رحمه الله said: “Welcome to winter; in it, blessings descend, the night becomes long for prayer, and the day becomes short for fasting.” [Latā’if Al-Ma’ārif: 327]

Fiqh

Abu Ad-Dardaa رضي الله عنه said: ❝Indeed from the understanding(فقه) of a person is: ١. Who he walks with. ٢. Who he enters upon. ٣. Who he sits with.‎ [al ojhwan, ibn abid dunya 121]

lie in speech

Abbad ibn Abbad al-Shami (رحمه الله) said: “Claiming to follow the Sunnah without acting upon it; is a lie in speech, along with wasting knowledge.” [Sunan Ad-Dārimī: 675]

3 things

Sufyān ath-Thawrī رحمه الله تعالى said: “Do not speak about three things: 1. Sins. 2. Good deeds. 3. Pain. This is true patience.” [hilyatul awliya 9397]

Root of every sin

Malik ibn Dinar (رحمه الله) said:

حُبّ الدُّنْيا رأس كُلّ خطيئة، والنِّساء حِبالةُ الشّيْطان، والخمر داعيَة كُلّ شر.

“Love of the worldly life is the root of every sin, women are the snares of Satan, and alcohol is the caller to all evil.” [Al-Zuhd by Ibn Abi Dunya: 212]
